( 1889-1943). Swiss painter, born in Davos; died in Zürich. After studying applied art in Munich and Hamburg, Sophie Taeuber was a teacher at the School of Arts and Crafts in Zürich for thirteen years. She belonged to the Dadaist movement together with Arp, whom she met in 1915 and married in 1921. She executed mural paintings and stained glass in Strasbourg, and in particular decorated several rooms of the restaurant L'Aubette (which has since been destroyed). From 1928 to 1940, she lived with Arp in Meudon, near Paris, and participated in exhibitions such as Cercle et ( 1930) and Abstraction-Création ( 1933), always showing abstract works with geometrical forms. She founded the review Plastique, four issues of which appeared between 1937 and 1939. During the Second World War she took refuge in Grasse and executed coloured lithographs in collaboration with Arp, Sonia Delaunay and Alberto Magnelli. During a trip to Switzerland, she died of asphyxiation from the fumes of a stove. She has left a great number of gouaches, drawings, water-colours and oil paintings, whose importance resides in their simplicity and at the same time in their richness of invention. She was beyond doubt one of the central figures in Abstract Art (*) between the two wars. Her art is occasionally related to Neo-Plasticism (cutouts of 1916 and the decorations of the 'Aubette'); at other times to a Constructivism, optimistic and light in spirit. Her work is an almost inexhaustible catalogue of abstract forms and techniques. The style is sober and of crystalline purity. Her innovations were always directed toward greater simplification, but also toward greater freedom, like exercises on a well-tempered clavichord.
