BERTHOLLE Jean
Born at Dijon June 26, 1909. His father was chief inspector of the railroad. He took courses at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts of Lyon, but after his arrival in Paris he spent only a short time at the Beaux-Arts. He was influenced at that time by the Surrealist milieu; the mystery of man in the world haunted him. As a result of his Surrealist and Cubist experiences, his art retained the simplicity of lines and volumes, the will of construction which for him are a means of expressing allusions to a secret world and of bringing forth the hidden connection of things.
